#BeWell34 Student Wellness Policy

In accordance with 7 CFR 210.31(c), a Local Education Agency that participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and/or School Breakfast Program (SBP) must establish a Local School Wellness Policy for all schools under its jurisdiction. As of June 30, 2017, Local Wellness Policies must meet the minimum requirements set forth in the Final Rule: Local School Wellness Policy Implementation Under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

Local Wellness Policies are a valuable tool in the promotion of student health and wellness through the NSLP and SBP. Schools play an essential role in preparing students for successful futures, and proper nutrition and physical activity is key to creating constructive learning environments. Local Wellness Policies provide guidance to further support schools efforts to provide students with a successful and healthy future.

This policy was updated based on input from the committee. The committee met to review the policy on April 11, 2023.

2023-2024 Student Wellness Goals

  • Implement and promote a week-long student #BeWell34 Bingo in spring 2024 in conjunction with the annual #BeWell34 staff wellness challenge. The challenge will include wellness activities on healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, screen time and social-emotional wellness. The school with the highest percentage of student participation will be recognized in D34 Family News and given a wellness-related award. Participation rate (measured by bingo board submissions) will be at least 70% of students in each building.
  • Partner with the Gelfand Foundation to promote the 5K Color Run to encourage family wellness. Provide a D34 wellness station as part of the event. Increase participation from the 2022 event by 25%, to 250.
  • Increase opportunities for before- or after-school enrichment activities that encourage student health and wellness. Find funding sources to make programs accessible to those with financial constraints. Ensure that all students have access to at least one additional wellness-related enrichment program by Spring 2024.
  • Provide an opportunity for students to submit their favorite healthy family recipe to be featured in the school meals program. Information about the contest will be posted on the website, in D34 Family News and on D34 social media. At least one recipe will be chosen from each school to taste test with students. The recipe with the highest student rating will be featured on the spring 2024 menu, and stories about the recipe, featuring the student who submitted it, will be included on the website, social media and in outreach to the media. The program will generate 100 submissions of family recipes, with a goal of serving 1,000 of the featured meal by the end of the school year.
